DVD Audio Disk Reviews
DVD Audio Disks? Yeah, I'll Take 'Em
DVD-A disks are one of my favorite formats due to their ease of use and rip-ability. The ability to have DTS on one layer and PCM on the other is also pretty handy. I found out about this dual layer thing quite by accident as I was beginning my foray into a digital library. I couldn't figure out why I wasn't ripping the DTS files from the disk, but only winding up with PCM files. I discovered that changing the setting in my Oppo from "DVD Audio" to "DVD Video" would give me the other layer. You can also be assured that your rips are always 24 bit/96KHz, too.
DVD-Audio (DVD-A) is a high-resolution audio format developed to deliver sound quality far beyond standard CDs. Using the storage capacity of a DVD, these discs provide dramatically improved clarity, dynamic range and immersive surround sound playback.
High-Resolution Sound
Unlike traditional CDs, which are limited to 16-bit/44.1kHz audio, DVD-Audio supports resolutions up to:
- 24-bit/192kHz in stereo
- 24-bit/96kHz in multi-channel surround
This results in greater detail, smoother high frequencies, tighter bass response, and a more realistic listening experience.
Surround Sound Capability
DVD-Audio discs can include 5.1 channel surround sound mixes, placing the listener inside the music rather than simply in front of it. When played through a compatible surround system, instruments and vocals are positioned with exceptional spatial accuracy.
Playback Compatibility
DVD-Audio discs require a DVD-Audio compatible player to access full high-resolution and surround features. Many discs also include a DVD-Video compatible layer with Dolby Digital or DTS tracks, allowing playback on standard DVD players.
